O’Farrell should front casino inquiry: ALP

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell must front an inquiry into the sacking of former Star Casino boss Sid Vaikunta, says Opposition Leader John Robertson.

He’s also accused the premier of lying to parliament over the matter.

Mr O’Farrell was drawn into the scandal on Monday when explosive texts from his suspended communications director, Peter Grimshaw, were read out during a public hearing Sydney.

The texts said the then opposition leader said the casino should be given a “wake up call” and that he and Mr Grimshaw were going to “smash” it.

Opposition Leader John Robertson on Tuesday said the premier should come clean.

“Barry O’Farrell should front up at the casino inquiry,” he told reporters.

“He should go down there and he should put his evidence before the inquiry so everybody knows exactly what he’s been doing.

“What is becoming more and more apparent is that this sad and sorry saga has been at the heart of Barry O’Farrell’s office in opposition and as premier of NSW.”

Mr Robertson also accused Mr O’Farrell of lying to parliament on Monday.

“In question time he was specifically asked `Has Peter Grimshaw ever discussed with you his dislike for (former Star managing director) Sid Vaikunta?’

“He got up and he said no,” Mr Robertson said.

“He has put his own credibility on the line and shown that he can’t be trusted.”

Mr Grimshaw will continue to give evidence on Tuesday into Mr Vaikunta’s sacking.

He has denied claims that he and his partner – both former casino employees – had orchestrated a campaign against the casino boss.

Mr Grimshaw’s partner, whose name is being protected by the inquiry, is one of two women to accuse Mr Vaikunta of sexual harassment.

Mr Robertson said Mr Grimshaw, who has been suspended from the premier’s office for the inquiry, should not return to the job.
