The severe storm rolls in over the south Brisbane suburb of Annerley

South-east Queensland is mopping up after severe thunderstorms and hail battered the region, leaving one person dead and thousands of homes without power.

The storms rolled in from the west around 4.00pm (AEST) on Saturday, bringing gusty winds, heavy rain and an early night to many residents.

The State Emergency Service received more than 80 calls for help from people with minor roof damage from small and large hail.

The worst damage was on the Gold Coast, where a large light pole crashed onto a football clubhouse.

There were scores of road accidents because of small hail and a man was killed when two cars collided at Ormeau.

At Strathpine to the north of Brisbane there were reports of golf ball-sized hail that caused damage to rooves, cars and windows.

Authorities say 70 of 76 retirement homes in a village at Petrie had damage to their skylights.

In Brisbane and Ipswich there were widespread reports of pea-sized hail falling.

The gusty conditions brought down powerlines, cutting electricity to thousands of customers.

Scores of lightning strikes in the state’s south-west sparked bushfires, but none are threatening any properties.

The weather bureau is expecting clear skies to return on Sunday.
