Just two glasses of wine or two strong pints of beer a day can treble the risk of mouth cancer, ministers warn.

They say that drinking slightly more than the recommended safe alcohol limits can massively raise the likelihood of many life-threatening illnesses.

In stark TV adverts to be aired this week, the Government will remind the public of the dangers of having a few drinks in the evening to unwind.

It will point out that besides trebling the risk of mouth cancer, regularly drinking six units of alcohol also doubles the chances of developing high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Current guidelines recommend that women drink no more than two or three units a night, and men no more than three or four.

A pint of beer or a standard (175ml) glass of wine contains two units, but stronger lagers or large glasses of wine have nearer three units.

Experts say a fifth of adults regularly consume more than the safe daily limits.

Ministers are concerned that most people are unaware of the extent to which alcohol drastically raises the risk of many life-threatening illnesses.

A recent study by Cancer Research UK
claimed alcohol causes 12,500 cases of cancer a year, including those
affecting the breast, bowel, mouth and throat.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:
‘It can be easy to slip into the habit of having a few extra drinks each
day, especially when drinking at home. But there can be serious health
risks. Don’t let drinking sneak up on you.

‘That is why I am launching this campaign – to alert people that it is not just binge drinkers that damage their health.’

Telling us what to drink again…. Do these people really think they get listened to.
– 2 Dare Is 2 do, Enfield, 5/2/2012 10:49====They’re just doing to drinkers what they did to smokers – and look where that led. I’m not a drinker – on average I have two small glasses of wine A YEAR – one at Christmas and one at New Year. I am sick and tired of these health zealots and their stupid health scares. If we were to listen to them we’d all die at a very young age from starvation/thirst and depression. Personally, I take absolutely no notice of these health scare stories and eat/drink whatever I want to, when I want.

Don’t drink at home before going out! Is that an order?

Oh yeah? Yes ” doctors” as an occupational group have one of the highest rates of alcohol abuse, so presumably don’t take their own advice. Yet another load of rubbish labelled “scientific research”.to try to make it look credible.

What they’re saying is…90% of the population of the world has “mouth cancer!” What other lunatic studies are they going to come up with? Let me guess what the next ones might be…….”Anyone wearing footwear of any kind for more than four hours at a time…stand the risk of gangrene sitting into your feet and legs”. Or how about…”Wearing hats or caps of any sort can cause brain tumors leading to cancer”! …….Are these researchers from this planet?

This sort of study can only be done by comparing non-drinkers with those who drink at a given level. (Until some totalitarian regime picks people at random and forces them into 50 years of behaviour in each of the prescribed manners).
We therefore cannot rule out the possibility that factors which make people into drinkers or non-drinkers may be responsible for the observed effects rather than the alcohol consumed.
Take the findings with a large pinch of salt (which is probably also bad for you!).

Trebling a near-zero risk still results in near-zero.

According to scientists everything causes cancer! We are all doomed! The way i see it if you drink too much you get liver failure and smoking gives you lung cancer. But if your meant to get cancer, you will get it. I dont believe certain food and drink can be a cause.

If “drinkers” continue to drink after being threatened with kidney and liver failure, I don’t think this scare will work either.
God forbid we have a wine or two to unwind.

Isn’t it about time these scientists studied the considerable health risks of fluoride in tap water? Especially as a whole tube of toothpaste can potentially kill a small child if ingested, (read the label).

Wait a minute, the public were informed a couple of years ago that a couple of glasses of red wine a day help stave off heart problems? Can we sue politicians for issuing deadly, false information?
