Pair who starved dog now fight to keep cat

A man and woman who cruelly starved their dog who died in agony after eating dirt, have argued in court that they shouldn’t have to surrender their pet cat and fish.

The RSPCA urged the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday to fine Craig Cottington and Melissa McDiarmid $10,000 each for their treatment of Chester.

Police and RSPCA officers found the male staffordshire terrier cross in a filthy pen outside a home in Crestmead, south of Brisbane, on May 15 last year.

He had been dead for three days.

A second dog that was also found in an extremely poor condition recovered, but later had to be put down for behavioural reasons.

The couple, who didn’t realise the dog was dead, said they only fed the dogs sporadically and never let them out of their pen.

A post mortem examination of Chester found he was chronically anorexic, and had dirt in his digestive system.

“Essentially the deceased dog was so starving it had eaten dirt,” the RSCPA’s lawyer, Simone Bain, said.

Cottington and McDiarmid both pleaded guilty to five charges of animal cruelty.

McDiarmid pleaded guilty to an additional offence of cruelty to a guinea pig that lost its foot and had to be put down after she bandaged it with electrical tape.

The RSPCA submitted the pair should surrender their cat and fish and be banned from owning animals for three years.

However, Cottington and McDiarmid, who represented themselves, objected to the surrender.

They were granted an adjournment until June 15 so they could seek legal advice on the issue.

Why is there not an animal cruelty offenders list.
Banned from owning animals or three years – who overseas this? who makes sure they dont get another animal from some backyard idiot who animals are just dollar signs on legs to!!!
There should be a list that everyone has access to where you can check, it should be the same as a sex offenders list!!
Lets make this happen and protect those who cant protect themselves – that is what it is about.
