Murderer pleads guilty to drug charge

A convicted murderer who cut up his victim’s body, burnt it and dumped it in a tub of acid has pleaded guilty to cultivating a cannabis crop that led to the brutal killing.

Leonard Borg, 28, was found guilty in April of murdering Peter Rule, 56, in November 2009.

At his pre-sentence hearing on the murder charge on Friday, Borg also pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis for trafficking purposes.

It was a crime he was prepared to kill for, the court was told.

Between April 2009 and September 2010, Borg and an associate grew several cannabis crops in a factory in Thomastown, in Melbourne’s north.

Borg’s seven-week murder trial heard he took Mr Rule to a factory where he shot him at close range 10 times, after Mr Rule told him he knew he was growing cannabis.

Over a period of days Borg dismembered Mr Rule’s body, set it on fire and placed parts in a tub of hydrochloric acid.

Prosecutor Mark Gibson told the Victorian Supreme Court the fact Borg murdered for self preservation should be considered an aggravating factor in sentencing.

He also highlighted the mistreatment of Mr Rule’s body and said Borg had demonstrated little regret for his crime.

“The absence of remorse is obvious in this case,” he said. “It was a fully contested matter.”

Mr Rule’s widow, Judith Rule, read victim impact statements from herself and their son Darcy, describing her husband as a doting father.

Borg looked on from the dock, showing no reaction.

“The horrific nature of Peter’s death is so devastating to us,” she said.

“No-one deserves what happened to Peter.

“We will never find justice unless (Borg) serves life in prison.”

Mr Gibson also told the court he intends to cross examine a psychologist over a report which found good prospects of rehabilitation for Borg.

“The court should be cautious in making that connection given Mr Borg’s reticence to accept responsibility for the crime,” Mr Gibson said.

The hearing was adjourned until June 8, when the psychologist will be available.

Borg also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods.
