Pakistan ruling party nominates new candidate for PM

“This is election year and we are going towards elections,” he said, referring
to the national assembly year, which starts in June.

A day earlier, an anti-narcotics court took the extraordinary step of issuing
an arrest warrant for Makhdoom Shahabuddin hours after he had been named as
President Asif Ali Zardari’s candidate for Prime Minister.

He is accused of involvement in a corruption scam related to the controlled
drug ephedrine when he was Health Minister, charges he denies.

His replacement is not without his own problems.

Mr Ashraf is nicknamed Raja Rental for his alleged role in the corrupt
procurement of rented electricity generating plants during his time as Water
and Power Minister. He stands accused of taking kickbacks from deals.

The case is before the Supreme Court and could provide ammunition for a
judiciary that seems intent on making trouble for President Zardari.
