Pakistan’s prime minister on collision course with Supreme Court

Pakistans
government faces multiple threats as it tries to become the first civilian
administration to complete a full five-year term.

Mr Gilani faces contempt proceedings and imprisonment for refusing to
implement an order to re-open an investigation into allegations that
President Asif Zardari made millions of dollars from kickbacks when his
wife, Benazir Bhutto, was prime minister in the 1990s.

At the same time, an investigation into an unsigned memo that sought US
support for a shake-up of the highest military ranks, has angered the army
and also threatens the government’s survival.

Meanwhile, gas and electricity shortages have led to angry demonstrations
against what many see as an ineffective and incompetent administration.

The tensions have led to feverish speculation that the military is plotting to
oust the president.

Many observers now believe the the government will be forced to call early
elections in the autumn.

The hearing was adjourned to January 30.
