Poland train accident claims 16 lives

The accident occurred on Saturday night when a train en route to the southern city of Krakow collided with another train, which was travelling on the same track to the capital Warsaw from the southeastern city of Przemysl.

At least 56 of the estimated 350 people on board were injured; some of them are in serious condition.

About 450 firefighters and 100 police officers are involved in the rescue operation. The firefighters say the “rescue is difficult and complicated.”

Witnesses say the engine and two compartments of one of the trains have derailed, leading to the accident. Dozens of rescue workers and helicopters have been deployed to the scene.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the accident “the most tragic train catastrophe” in the country’s history as he toured the crash site on early Sunday.
