Police chopper and chomper make arrest

The Gold Coast’s police helicopter and the city’s most famous police dog have worked together to nab a man wanted on a string of weapons and theft offences.

The chopper spotted a stolen car about 5pm (AEST) on Sunday at Pacific Pines, but when a patrol car tried to intercept it minutes later at Arundel the driver allegedly sped off, police say.

The pursuit was abandoned but the chopper tracked the car while officers set up a roadblock.

Police say the driver crashed into a tree as he tried to drive around the roadblock, then ran into nearby bush where he was tracked down and bitten on the leg by a police dog.

A loaded sawn-off rifle and house-breaking implements were allegedly found in the car.

A 24-year-old Coombabah man has been charged with nine offences.

Bosun, the six-year-old German shepherd police dog involved in the arrest, has become a Gold Coast celebrity.

He played a key role in the arrest of the alleged killers of Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding last May and spent weeks recovering after being mauled by two dogs during an arrest at Upper Coomera a month ago.

Two weeks ago he gave up the bulk of his coat when he was “clipped for a cure” as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser.
