Police in fatal shooting continue to work

There is no reason why three officers involved in the fatal shooting of a gunman at a Sydney shopping centre should be stood down, senior police say.

The three plain clothes policemen who drew their guns on a man on Thursday afternoon at Castle Towers shopping centre, in Sydney’s north west, are working as usual on Friday.

Witnesses heard three shots before the man died in his vehicle outside the shopping centre in front of scores of high school students studying at a nearby library.

Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas said all three officers had been interviewed and had been offered counselling.

They have elected to continue with their normal duties.

“There is no reason available to us or known to us at the moment to stand any of them down and they have not sought to stand down themselves – they’re fine,” Mr Kaldas told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

Police have notified some of the man’s family but have not released his name.

Investigators have spoken to dozens of witnesses and a number of people who rang triple-0.

Even though the officers have reported for work on Friday, Mr Kaldas would not speculate on whether the shooting was justified.

“I wouldn’t like to double guess the results of the investigation prior to the conclusion,” he said.

Generally speaking, he ruled out the use of a taser in such incidents.

“You can’t use a taser on someone who’s about to shoot you,” Mr Kaldas said.
