Police remember the fallen

Victorian police officers have marched through Melbourne in tribute to 157 colleagues killed in the line of duty.

The National Police Remembrance Day parade down St Kilda Road on Thursday led to a memorial service at the Victoria Police Memorial in Kings Domain Gardens, attended by police members and relatives of the fallen.

Acting chief commissioner Ken Lay said it was an important day for police and the community to pay tribute to the officers who lost their lives onduty since 1853.

Of those, 30 were murdered.

“It is a very important day for Victoria Police, it’s the most important day on the police calender,” Mr Lay said.

“I thank the community for their ongoing support for what is and can sometimes be a very, very dangerous job.

“Never forget that each member killed in the line of duty has meant someone has lost a father, mother, husband, wife, son daughter, brother or sister.”

After the service, Victorian police minister Peter Ryan announced a police graves memorial fund which will be funded with an initial $50,000.

“The intention is that we are able to ensure we can appropriately mark the graves of those who have died in service but whose graves are otherwise unattended as things presently stand,” he said.

The Victorian government established the fund with police command, the Police Association, the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Victoria Police Historical Society.

Mr Ryan said the fund will mean Victorian constable David McGrath, who died 100 years ago, and others whose graves have not been properly marked until now, will be given due dignity for their sacrifice.

Memorial services were also held across regional Victoria, culminating in the lowering of the Police Ensign at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

The Bolte Bridge was also decorated in blue lights to mark Blue Ribbon Day, which coincides with National Remembrance Day.

Mr Lay encouraged Victorians to wear a blue and white ribbon out of respect for police killed on duty.
