Federal Climate Change Minister Greg Combet says there will be time to plan strategies for the Latrobe Valley to adjust to the carbon tax.

The Senate passed the Government’s carbon tax legislation yesterday.

A power buy-back by the Government could result in the closure of the Hazelwood or Yallourn Power Stations.

But Mr Combet says any decision will not be made until next year and the phase out will take until 2020.

“We have said we’d engage in this negotiation process by polluting generators to see whether they’d like to be involved in a planned phase out of capacity,” he said.

“We will deal with any implications for the region once we’ve got a clearer picture of what that time line looks like.”
