PRC condemns Congress attempts to remove refugees’ issue

AMMAN,(PIC)– The Palestinian Rights Committee (PRC), in Jordan, condemned the American continuous attempts to write off the Palestinian refugees’ issue.

The committee described in a statement, on Tuesday, the position of the US congress saying that it is practicing a biased policy and immoral hypocrisy and hostility towards Palestinian case and people.

The committee pointed out that the US proposals are aiming to differentiate between Palestinian refugees who have been displaced from Palestine during the Nakba and between their children, claiming that the Palestinian refugees’ number is only 30,000 people, counting those who remain alive out of the 750,000 Palestinians who were uprooted from their homes in 1948.

The US proposal calls not to consider the Palestinian refugees in Jordan, West Bank, and the Palestinian refugees of 1948 and their children as refugees. As a consequence there will not be refugees to serve or support through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA.

The statement confirmed that it is not the first time in which the US tried to neglect the refugees’ issue on UN level where it had previously tried more than once not to pass UN resolutions concerning the Palestinian refugees who number five million recognized by UN.

The committee warned against the seriousness of these attempts and their influence on the US and UN agencies position in dealing with the refugees’ issue and the Arab countries as well.

Members of US congress led by Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk have presented proposals concerning the budget of the United States foreign department which grant limited aid to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees UNRWA, and they also proposed to decrease the Palestinian refugees’ numbers in order to get rid of their issue.
