Qld’s suspended trains to resume

Two of four train lines suspended in Queensland’s central west over safety concerns are set to reopen.

The rail safety regulator ordered the suspensions on Friday after it was revealed that more than 70 wooden bridges had been given the all-clear following recent floods even though they had never been inspected.

The state government said four train lines operated by Queensland Rail would need to be reinspected before passenger, cattle and other freight services could resume.

Following safety checks on Saturday, Transport Minister Scott Emerson announced that train services would be allowed to resume on Sunday on two of the four lines.

The line between Emerald and Longreach would be opened with a number of restrictions in place, Mr Emerson said.

“This will come as some relief to graziers and tourism operators in the region who rely on these lines for their business,” he said.

Inspections on 13 remaining bridges on the line are to be carried out over the coming week, during which time a 15km/h speed restriction will be enforced when crossing.

The line between Winton and Longreach is also set to reopen on Sunday.

“The prohibition on this line has been lifted after Queensland Rail provided the necessary safety assurances to the Rail Safety Regulator,” Mr Emerson said.

The lines between Clermont and Emerald and between Emerald and Springsure are to remain closed pending further inspections.

Meanwhile, the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) is to oversee an investigation into the actions of two Queensland Rail bridge maintenance staff.

“The Rail Safety Regulator has also commenced a formal investigation into the conduct of Queensland Rail at both an individual and organisational level to determine whether they have complied with their rail safety duties,” Mr Emerson said.
