Quarter of UK richest, Tory donors

GMB said its analysis of The Sunday Times list of richest people in Britain in 2012 found that 248 out of the top 1,000 richest have made financial contributions to the party in person, through their companies or family members.

GMB said the donations by rich financiers of the party total a whopping £83, 659,167.

The union, which unveiled the analysis during its congress in Brighton on Wednesday, said it has attained the information on political donations from the Electoral Commission and the Register of Members Interest that cover the data from 2001 to May 2012.

According to the list of donations on GMB’s website, Lord Ashcroft topped the donations list with £6.1 million followed by the Getty family (£5 million) and Michael Spencer, the chief executive of the world’s leading interdealer broker ICAP plc (£4.8 million).

The findings would increase pressure on the Tory-led government that was accused of robbing the poor to pay the rich after the Conservative Chancellor George Osborne’s budget introduced an income tax cut from 50pc to 45pc for those earning more than £150,000.

GMB general secretary Paul Kenny said the list of Tory donors clearly shows where the real allegiance of the government lies.

“It is clear that the wealthy look to the Tory Party to protect their interests and they have been repaid with policies like the change in Income Tax, down from 50p to 45p. This is not philanthropy. It is an investment by an elite in an elite to look after their interests,” Kenny said.
