Queen’s visit reignites flares of anger

Queen Elizabeth II wore green on her visit to mark the 60th anniversary of sitting on the throne. However, the Bitter memories of decades of violence, which are locally known as The Troubles, once again emerged among the Irish people.

The British Queen shook hands with Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre. McGuiness spoke to the Queen in Irish, greeting her with the words “you’re welcome”.

Moreover, he used no title. However, When McGuiness turned to greet Irish President Michael D Higgins, he uttered a more generous statement using words “a hundred thousand welcomes” and added, “Mr President”.

On the way out, McGuiness spoke with the Queen in Irish one more time, saying “Goodbye and God’s speed”.

Meanwhile, republican protesters, embittered by the violent memories of British armed forces’ atrocities, staged a protest on Belfast’s Black Mountain against the Queen’s visit.

The protesters were attacked as they carried banners with the slogan “Eriu is Our Queen”. Eriu is represented as goddess of Ireland and is interpreted as a modern day personification of Ireland.

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said several issues remained to be resolved as he called for an investigation into murders committed by British armed forces.
