Regular patrol officers in Florida are to be provided with bullet-proof ballistic shields in another sign of how police departments are preparing for violence and civil unrest in America.
“Saxon Security and its partner LCOA Defense have been named suppliers to the St. Petersburg (Florida) police department for new ballistic shields for general patrol officers,” reports BusinessWire. 45 ballistic shields will be provided to routine beat cops.
The video above shows the Deadstop Ballistic Shield repelling bullets. The clip displays the use of the shield in SWAT-style scenarios but now regular beat officers will also carry it while on patrol.
LCOA’s website also clearly places the use of the shield in the context of SWAT operations, not day to day patrols.
“DeadStop® Shields provide protection for a tactical squad in a live fire scenario. Developed in concert with US SWAT teams, our shields provide expected coverage at a surprising net weight,” states the promo text.
Arming general patrol officers with bullet and projectile-repellent shields is another indication that law enforcement bodies across the country are preparing for potential civil dislocation.
The federal government is also making similar preparations. Back in March, the Department of Homeland Security awarded defense contractor ATK a deal to provide the DHS with 450 million rounds of bullets over a five year period.
The DHS has also recently purchased a number of bullet-proof checkpoint booths that include ‘stop and go’ lights.

With forecasters predicting violent unrest later this year as a result of a deepening economic crisis, police bodies like the NYPD have held “mobilization exercises” to train police to prepare for civil unrest in the United States.
In August last year, the NYPD Disorder Control Unit brought together police from all five of the city’s boroughs to rehearse what the response would be “should out-of-control riots break out here”.
A report produced by the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Institute in 2008 warned that the United States may experience massive civil unrest in the wake of a series of crises which it termed “strategic shock.”
“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” stated the report, authored by [Ret.] Lt. Col. Nathan Freir, adding that the military may be needed to quell “purposeful domestic resistance”.

Most of these shields are level 111A and will not stop rifle rounds. The level 3+ and 4 are made to withstand rifle rounds but are incredibly expensive and more than likely the shields described here are 22 plus layers of kevlar and are meant only to deal with up to a .44 magnum pistol round. 30-06 WILL GO STRAIGHT THROUGH IT.

No doubt, and people need to start buying their own armor while they still can. It’s often overlooked in favor of more bullets and weapons, but may end up being the deciding factor in living or dying.

I’m just wondering if these ballistic shields/vests are giving police a false sense of security, because…in a civil war scenario…they have a lot to be desired.
For example, while these limited protective shields have an important use in urban areas against crowds that might be armed with pistols, they’re not much good when it comes to roof top snipers armed with rifles, which would be in abundance in any city.
Too, in the event of large scale civil hostilities the main threat to police would be in becoming totally and completely overwhelmed by mobs of tens of thousands of combatants who would wrest their weapons from them.
DHS and the police forces around the country can buy all the ammo they can shoot and manufacture all the ballistic vests they can use, but nothing will protect them from raging mobs that would literally stampede them into oblivion by sheer numbers alone.
Don’t let the government intimidate you with all these press releases on the utilization of drones, ballistic shields, APC’s or what have you, because they’re useless against millions of people who decide they’re going to take matters into their own hands.
The police are effective so long as we allow them to be. The minute they decide to oppress us, enslave us or put us down through naked force, that will signal the beginning of their inglorius end.
As long as there is a second amendment this government and this country is still ours and does not belong to a few miscreants who think they can rule over us.

The Taurus .17 HMR Tracker Revolver with Hornady seventeen grain V-Max bullet averaged 2168 ft/s or 650m/s. The Taurus Model 951 5 in barreled will get around 1550 ft/s and the Ruger 17 Mk111 HA2 around 1800 ft/s. Level 111A doesn’t seem to like anything over 1400 ft/s

I do believe that there potentially is pistol ammunition out there i.e. smaller calibre, high balistic velocity (long barreled pistols) that will punch neat little holes through soft 111A 20+ layers of kevlar.

a-salty-dog I think you could be correct but I am not going to bet my life on a pistol. They’ll get my greatest firepower first. Alot of times too they can attach level 3 or 4 rifle plates to the back of these shields just as I have put these plates in my own level 3a vest. It works well and a trauma plate is needed also in a vest configured this way.

Given the fact that they can attach rifle plates, I agree with bkr360, and will target an unprotected/underprotected area first. God help us if this shit ever goes down, but I truly believe it will soon. I don’t care who’s trying to come storming into my home, I will defend it.

A 7.62 is a 308 and with solid jacketed slugs will go through those vests and shields, but maybe not at the same time. I believe it is Hornady that makes a solid copper alloy slug that is unbelievable. Check it out on Cabella’s site.

I don’t agree. This is an election year so the party is on. It will be after the fake election then they will raise your taxes and tolls.
I think these shields are the result of extra money they had in their budget that they had to spend, or else they would have had to return it like what Ron Paul does… horrors!!!

This is a true statement, and insurrection is coming, it will be planned and people will follow. The war will be a race and class war, then a civil war. Peaceful demonstrations have reached their peak, and soon unrest will happen. Lock your doors, stock food for at least three months, stock cigarettes and liquor in order to use them as bargaining tools, get gold and silver as another means of barter. Learn at least one trade, preferably gardening, carpentry, and basic electronics. Do not join this civil unrest because it makes no sense to do so. Get to know your neighbors well and prepare for this plight.

Then again, it’s better to show up behind your enemies unannounced.
There is a principle found in warfare where most soldiers don’t actually fire at the enemy, even with some training.
Therefore, should the day arrive, remember they are monsters and aim for the heart!
You’d better do a whole lot of brainstorming about “playing to win.”
War is horrific and you don’t want to be hesitating at the wrong time, lest you end up like the soldier in “Saving Private Ryan” whose intestines were exposed and cried for mommy. I’m sure I would too in that situation.
Be humble and move to cover. Unlike in “Call of Duty”, when you get shot the screen doesn’t just turn red for a bit then you move on. Get exercise, and learn to quickly move your body with all your gear to behind something bulletproof!
A squad of trained, body armored goons is an enemy you should respect until they are completely destroyed.

There’s an awful lot of leg exposed there. Just like shooting under a car. A bullet in the foot or shin will get someone to drop that shield PDQ. That aside, there’s plenty of AP and API out there if you’re willing to spend the money.
I’m not advocating ANYTHING, just stating the obvious. They ought not to get complacent with these shields. Right now, the police are dealing with drug dealers thieves and I have no problem with that. In fact, I applaud them for their efforts. However, if they think that they can impose some sort of martial law on honest, hard working Americans, they would likely find taht more than a few of us are better trained, better armed, more disciplined and more ready to die rather than live under the yoke of slavery.
I’m sure the perps will just wait patiently while the cops get these out of the trunks of their cruisers
Considering that people are armed to the teeth in Florida and the state has a huge nu,mber of concealed weapons permits, this is not an unexpected outcome. Of course this does nothing for a street incident that is unforeseen.
The St Petersburg Police have a long history of shooting black youths, many times fleeing the Police. Deadly force is allowed on fleeing felons. Since spitting on the sidealk is a felony in Florida they get to pretty much shoot who they choose. They are always cleared too.
EASY SOLUTION – flamethrowers w/ a napalm-like fuel. Squirt their feet and over the tops of the shields. Hoot feet and hot heads!!!
