The Federal Greens are standing by Senator Lee Rhiannon who has admitted to secretly writing part of an article which attacked her own party.

The February article appeared under the the name of another author and accused the Greens of being in the “same league as the old parties” for accepting a $1.7 million donation from travel website entrepreneur Graeme Wood.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), the donation was the biggest political donation from any one person last financial year.

Each year political donors must declare to the AEC donations over a certain amount. Last financial year the threshold was $11,500.

In February, Senator Rhiannon publicly backed calls for electoral reform, saying political donations from big corporations were affecting democracy.

But she also now admits she secretly wrote part of an article at the time decrying the Greens for accepting Mr Wood’s donation.

Senator Rhiannon says she regrets her part in the story and the damage it may have caused.

Fellow Greens Senator Richard Di Natale says he accepts Senator Rhiannon’s apology.

“I wouldn’t call it infighting. I think Lee’s admitted she’s made a mistake, it was a mistake, no question about it, it was the wrong thing to do,” he said.

“She’s admitted that and it’s time to move on.”
