S. Korea gripped by Internet addiction

According to a recent government survey, students categorized as “at-risk” and “high-risk,” can suffer withdrawal symptoms including depression, when they are not using the Internet.

Internet addiction is now recognized as a clinical condition in the Asian country and in order to cut the online appetite, clinical treatments have been implemented.

Although the survey showed a decrease in potential addictions, analysts warn that the survey is merely a reference rather than an exact measurement.

“The investigation surveyed all fourth-graders, first-year middle school and first-year high school students, but the survey’s format is too problematic and to trust the statistics is difficult. We can simply believe in the self-reported student questionnaires and deal with that information but that is dependent on how honest the students are or how society as a whole uses the Internet,” Cho Eun-suk of the Internet Addiction Protection Center told Press TV.

The severity of South Korea’s internet addiction has called for clinical treatment by the government and health officials. Though wide arrays of treatments are available, experts suggest that family involvement is the best cure.

“Most patients receive counseling and medication together. Medicine helps them remain calm and suppresses their imagination, which is far from reality. Counseling analyzes the origins of their symptoms and educates family members to have to help. There are also psychological treatments, art therapy, music therapy and confidence-building through retreat activities,” Kim Hyun-oh of the Internet Addiction Consultation Center told Press TV.

Critics have also repeatedly linked the suicides of high-profile celebrities and politicians to diatribes by the online groups.

Controversy over the Internet addiction in South Korea mainly arose when marathon gaming sessions led to a few deaths in previous years.
