S. Korea president apologizes over graft

“I bow my head in apology to the people for causing concern over this matter,” Lee said live on television on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

“Who could I blame at this point? It is all my fault. I will willingly accept any rebuke,” said the South Korean president whose brother Lee Sang-deuk, a long-time MP, was taken into custody on July 11, one week after he was questioned about allegations that he took money from a failed savings bank in return for favors.

The president is leaving office in February 2013.

Lee Sang-deuk was investigated on suspicion of receiving more than $500,000 from two banks that tried to salvage their businesses through political influence while it is speculated that he has received millions of US dollars in bribes.

Though corruption cases among associates of the president have been a consistent theme in earlier governments, the Lee administration stands out in regard to the sheer number and speed with which they have been uncovered.

Bribery accusations against the president’s brother were first made in February, when he denounced the allegations as untrue.

A former six-term lawmaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Lee Sang-deuk is considered the most powerful politician in the Lee administration, with South Korean media outlets saying, “All roads lead to the brother.”
