‘Sanctions unlikely to halt Iran N-work’

Barak said the existing sanctions on Iran were harsher than ever but seemed unlikely to stop Tehran’s nuclear work.

“The chances that under this level of pressure Iran will meet international demands to irreversibly stop its (nuclear energy) program seem slim,” AFP quoted Barak as saying in an address to foreign diplomats late Thursday.

The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

The US and EU have recently imposed tough financial and oil sanctions against Iran in a bid to pile up pressure on the country.

The EU agreed on January 23 to ban oil imports as well as petroleum products from Iran and freeze the assets of the Iranian Central Bank across the EU. The European Union also imposed a ban on the sale of gold, diamonds, and other precious metals to Iran.

On the New Year’s Eve, US President Barack Obama also signed into a law draft sanctions targeting the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) and the country’s financial sector.

The sanctions measure requires foreign financial institutions to make a choice between transactions with the CBI and Iran’s oil and financial sector or blockage from the US economy.

The US sanctions are slated to take full effect June 28, and EU’s full embargo of Iranian oil is set for July 1.

Iran has repeatedly dismissed allegations over its nuclear activities, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
