Schoolkids bonus at risk under Abbott:Swan

Acting Prime Minister Wayne Swan has warned that the government’s school kids bonus could be one of the first items to get the chop under a coalition government.

From Wednesday, 1.3 million families will receive the cash bonus to pay for school items – a move announced in the May budget.

Families receiving their Family Tax Benefit Part A fortnightly will get $409 for each child in primary school and $818 for each child in high school.

“This will be a welcome bit of relief for a lot of families who struggle to buy the school uniform, school excursions, stationary and so on,” Mr Swan told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

“Those costs can sure pile up.”

He noted Opposition Leader Tony Abbott had said he would be going through the budget line-by-line, which Mr Swan said was a necessity because the coalition has a “$70 billion crater in its budget bottom line”.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the schoolkids bonus was one of the first things that got the chop because it was opposed by the Liberals in the House,” Mr Swan said.

Mr Swan dismissed suggestions the school kids bonus was an economic stimulus measure.
