Researchers in England at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge have discovered that man-made molecules called “XNAs” function just as DNA and RNA as the basis for all life on Earth. Natural life on Earth is made up of nucleic acids called DNA and RNA that are formed by sugar molecules. Those molecules are deoxyribose in DNA and ribose in RNA.

DNA contains the building blocks of information required to create an organism.

RNA translates that information into proteins.

These presumptuous scientists led by Vitor Pinherio, are claiming that natural DNA and RNA “aren’t the only answers”.

These scientists are manipulating XNA to assist pharmaceutical corporations in designing better drugs. Companies like Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. work on manipulating what they refer to as “interfering RNAs”. They want to find better ways of making DNA translate their synthetic drugs to maximize the body’s absorption. This would overcome their issues of bio-genetic diversity when creating a “universal” drug.

Simply by manipulating the natural molecules of the human genetic code, drug corporations can have an advantage over creating essential super-drugs.
“Everyone wants to know what aliens would use for DNA,” said Steven Benner, a biochemist at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution in Gainesville, Fla., who has synthesized artificial DNA but was not involved in the new study. “Lab experiments tell you about the possibilities in the universe.”

To alter the genetic function of an organism, scientists tinker with either DNA or RNA and see what the changes produce.

The researchers of the study were provided their synthesized molecules by other labs of corporations. They used engineered groups of enzymes to rewrite the DNA, and then write the XNA.

Dr. Gerald Joyce , a researcher for the Scripps Research Institute referred to this process as “domesticated breeding of molecules.” Joyce, who was not involved in the study at Cambridge, wrote an editorial about the techniques used to translate the procedure for other scientists wanting to elaborate on these findings.

While Pinherio sees XNAs an aid to the drug corporations in designing their pharmaceuticals, the manipulation of human DNA and RNA for the purpose of creating synthetic XNA that will be used in the manufacturing of the drugs are meant to speed up the process. The XNA based drugs would also be engineered to produce results in laboratory tests that the trial study researchers most desire.

Pinheiro boasts that this development speeds up the move by humans to engineer humanity toward a more Darwinian point of view.
