Screaming JetBlue pilot charged with interfering with flight crew

His colleagues realised something was seriously wrong when he told them
“things just don’t matter” and “we need to take a
leap of faith”, according to the signed court documents.

Captain Osbon stood up in the cockpit abruptly, ignoring protocol, to go to
the bathroom. When he discovered the forward lavatory was occupied he began
banging on the door and acting aggressively towards the flight attendants.

The captain paced towards the rear of the aircraft, stopping only to ask a
male passenger if he had a problem. Before Osborn was able to re-enter his
code to access the cockpit, his co-pilot requested over the intercom that
passengers restrain the pilot.

As they grappled with him, he shouted about Jesus, September 11, Iraq, Iran
and terrorists.

The plane performed an emergency landing at Amarillo airport and the pilot was
extracted from the craft and taken to the medical facility in northwest
Texas, where he remains.

Dave Barger, CEO of JetBlue, told NBC’s Today show that Captain Osbon had been
a “consummate professional.”

He said the incident began as a “medical situation” and became a “security
situation”, adding that he had known Osbon for many years.

“I’ve known the captain personally for a long period of time,” he
said. “There’s been no indication of this at all in the past.”
