A microchip used by the US military and manufactured in China contains a secret “backdoor” that means it can be shut off or reprogrammed without the user knowing, according to researchers at Cambridge University’s Computing Laboratory.

UPDATE: However, one security consultancy has said that the implication that the backdoor might have been secretly inserted by the Chinese manufacturer is “bogus”, and that malicious intent is unlikely.

In a draft paper, Cambridge University researcher Sergei Skorobogatov wrote that the chip in question is widely used in military and industrial applications. The “backdoor” means it is “wide open to intellectual property theft, fraud and reverse engineering of the design to allow the introduction of a backdoor or Trojan”, they said.

The discovery was made during testing of a new technique to extract the encryption key from chips, developed by Cambridge spin-off Quo Vadis Labs. The “bug” is in the actual chip itself, Skorobogatov wrote, rather than the firmware installed on the devices that use it, meaning there is no way to fix it than to replace the chip altogether.

It ain’t cheap though if they can damage or spy through everything that’s got them. Makes me wonder if we are not intentionally passing tech.

  2. And we are having our enemies make our military chips exactly why again?

i seem to remember about the manufacture of these chips , when they are made they are sprayed with an electronic parts cleaner that our EPA found to be harmful to the ozone.
so the resulting regulation made it impossibly expensive to manufacture them in the US.

i guess the ozone is stronger in china .lol

I wouldn’t mind the Chinese government erased though. They are as bad as our own.

  5. The Parasites called management in todays American companies have no allegiance except to their bottom line. They would have them made in Hades if it would increase their bonuses. No patriotism from them unless it pays….

  6. Having military components manufactured by a potential and probable enemy is brilliant! Sounds just like the US government.

  7. If these chips are of such a sensitive nature then maybe they should be produced domestically. If that is too much to ask then the military should stfu.

  8. It was designed that way. Probably PROMIS was made to use it and other backdoors.

  9. having worked at lockheed martin, digital equipment corp., and kollsmans, on highly sensitive electronic components for a living during the 80′s and 90′s I know for a FACT that our manufacturing was GIVEN away!

    Not sold.

    Not stolen.

GIVEN AWAY by our very own gubbermint who used USA TAX MONEY to pay for the entire factory lock-stock-and barrel, to be shipped overseas to benefit some corporate asshole and their profit margins. Then they get to bring back/sell to the USA infected, toxic, copies of what our very own people made right here….and they get to do it tax duty free so they can pocket ALL of the profits.
