Sepahan sweeps past Blues to quarters

Sepahan pummeled the Blues 2-0 at Isfahan’s Fouladshahr stadium on Tuesday.

Sepahan took the lead eight minutes into the match when its Brazilian forward Bruno César Correa opened the scoring through a deft strike from close range.

The lead was doubled in the 35th minute of the match when Fabio Januario’s corner from the left went far too deep and Xhevahir Sukaj headed the ball back across goal and then Mohsen Bengar rose above the Esteqlal defence to ripple the net with a solid header.

Esteqlal struggled hard throughout the second half but failed to create a single clear scoring opportunity.

“We proved that we are the best team in Iran,” said Sepahan coach Zlatko Kranjcar after the match, adding, “As well as proving that we were the dominant and better side, we also showed that we can play good football against a strong team like Esteqlal.”

“I congratulate the players and our supporters for the win, and I am confident that we can get this team to an even higher level… Today we played good tactical football and followed all of our plans for the game,” he added.

Sepahan had edged Esteqlal by a point to lift its third straight Iran Premier League title earlier this month.

The draw for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final of the tourney are yet to be made.

Other Iranian club Persepolis will take on al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday at Prince Abdullah al-Faisal stadium in Jeddah.
