Shaw matter referred to Vic ombudsman

Embattled Victorian Liberal Geoff Shaw says he has co-operated with an investigation by the Speaker into allegations that he misused a taxpayer-funded car.

The Speaker, Ken Smith, has sent a statement by a whistleblower to the Ombudsman.

In a two-paragraph statement issued on Monday night, Mr Shaw said he has assisted the Speaker with his inquiries and will do likewise with the Ombudsman.

He said that because the matter is now before the Ombudsman he won’t be making any further comment except to say he welcomes the opportunity to resolve the issue.

Mr Shaw is already under investigation by the Department of Parliamentary Services and Mr Smith over the claims relating to the car.

Mr Smith said it will be up to the ombudsman to determine if the whistleblower’s disclosure falls within the public interest.

Whistleblowers quoted in a report in the Sunday Herald Sun said Mr Shaw used the car for personal gain, directing employees of his hardware business to use it for interstate business trips.

Mr Shaw said he didn’t know the car was being used to conduct his business and would repay any costs associated with improper use of the vehicle.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said Mr Smith’s comments validated Labor’s point that Liberals should not be investigating other Liberals.

“The Speaker himself has made it clear today that he does not have the power, the authority, he doesn’t have the certainty required to conduct this investigation,” Mr Andrews told reporters.

He said the most appropriate course of action is for the matter to be referred to police.

“We try and ask questions and the Speaker shuts us down,” he said.

“This is not transparent, this is not open, this is not accountable.”

Premier Ted Baillieu has stood by Mr Shaw, saying he had no reason to doubt his integrity.

Mr Shaw holds the seat of Frankston by just 2.08 per cent.

In the event Mr Shaw is forced to resign, the government’s one seat majority would be in serious jeopardy.
