SHOTS were fired between two cars overnight, with stray bullets hitting a home and car – making it the ninth shooting incident in Sydney in less than two weeks.

Gunfire erupted in Hillcrest Ave, Greenacre about 10pm between two cars, with two bullets hitting a fibro home on the corner of Mimosa Rd and shattering the windscreen of a car parked on the street, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The family who lives inside were not injured and the house was not believed to be the intended target, a police spokeswoman said.

One neighbour reported hearing about six loud bangs that sounded like gunshots about 10pm.

Police blocked off the street after finding a number of bullet casings on the road and set up a secondary crime scene at nearby Defoe St, Wiley Park after a stolen silver Toyota RAV4 – believed to be involved in the shooting – was found burnt out about 10.45pm.

It is believed a member of the public may have seen and then followed the cars, possibly to Fairford Rd in Bankstown, but police were unable to get back in contact with the anonymous caller to get any further details.

Police formed Strike Force Restore last week after seven homes and business were shot at, with police revealing they believe four of the previous incidents were linked, including shots fired at a on Mallacoota St, Wakeley and at Sesame Pizzeria in Merrylands West.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Bankstown Police on 9783 2199 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
