Almost one in four people claiming sickness benefit have criminal records, an official analysis showed yesterday.

Background checks on those receiving state handouts because they are too ill to work revealed that nearly a quarter have been convicted or cautioned for criminal offences in the past ten years.

The findings from a Government research project show a high proportion of claimants who claim they are unfit for work appear to be fit enough to commit crime.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said figures revealing almost one in four people claiming sickness benefit have criminal records were 'truly alarming'

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said figures revealing almost one in four people claiming sickness benefit have criminal records were ‘truly alarming’

Ministers described the findings of the first investigation into the connection between state handouts and crime as ‘truly alarming’.

The study found that 21 per cent of the 1,565,000 claiming incapacity benefit – the payment brought in during the Eighties for those too ill to work – had committed at least once offence over the last ten years, while 4 per cent were jailed.

But in a blow to ministers’ hopes of reducing the number of claimants who abuse welfare handouts, researchers found that employment and support allowance (ESA) – the supposedly more rigorous replacement for incapacity benefit – was being paid to an even higher proportion of people who had committed crimes.

ESA was introduced in 2008 and is running in parallel with incapacity benefit, which is being phased out.

Even though ESA includes a fitness-for-work test to weed out unconvincing claims, 28 per cent of its 538,000 claimants had offended and 8 per cent had been imprisoned.

The combined figures for the two benefits mean 23 per cent of all sickness claimants have offended.

Researcher Patricia Morgan said: ‘A lot of people who have opted for incapacity benefit do seem to have committed criminal offences.

‘There are people who claim incapacity benefit because they are alcoholics or use drugs. They shouldn’t be allowed to, but they do.

‘They do not need to work and often they steal to maintain their drinking or addiction. Generally people who work do not commit crime.

‘But for some people incapacity benefit is a subsidy to give them time to go out and thieve.’

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: ‘This paints a truly alarming picture of the challenge we face.’

SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!
Now lets look at COMPENSATION crime……..All those teachers and carers jailed.

Have they only just discovered this? Maybe they should have asked the staff who process the claims and social fund applications

Yet more hatred of those in need ! CaMORON will do anything to turn people against the sick and disabled .he wants to eradicate us from this country.According to him its shameful to take money from the state . He wants to be telling himself and his cronies that same thing then because that’s all they ever do! They take every single penny they can get their grubby hands on .Take, take, take.

And that goes for the Greedy bankers too….Stop all the benifts, and open soup kitchens etc…And there wont be so many scroungers coming into our Country..And sod the human rights act we are not the worlds dumping ground…

Actually I’m surprised it isn’t more!

Two wrongs don’t make a right, but I seem to remember a little matter of MPs fiddling their expenses. They are the biggest “benefit” cheats and criminals this country has known for quite some time. And they presume to lecture the nation?

absolutely disgusting ……..the government have been doing a pretty good demonising the sick and vunerable as workshy scroungers but they really have sunk to a new low by labelling them criminals aswell

Over 50% of MPs found to have submitted dodgy expeneses claims, over 50% of the UKs wealthiest people biggest companies found to have avoided paying the correct amount of tax, the majority of UK banks found to have participated in fixing the Libor rate which led to people losing their homes paying inflated costs on loans, UK traders suspected of manipulating oil prices at the expense of UK motorists. A ll to their own advantage. Why not highlight both sides of the story. Oops forgot these are the chosen ones !!!

It used to amaze me how many people were on the sick when taking antecedents from them on Sunday morning following a night in the cells. In my opinion fit to fight and drink on Saturday night too fit for benefits

Mmmm…our government is included in that i hope. They claim copious ammounts of tax payers money and commit crime every single day.
