Soldiers, interpreter hurt in drug raid

Two Australian soldiers and a civilian interpreter have been wounded during a drug raid in Afghanistan.

The three were injured on Monday in separate bouts of insurgent fire during a 14-hour mission targeting a drug processing facility in the province of Helmand.

Chief of Joint Operations Lieutenant General Ash Power said on each occasion other soldiers helped the injured and organised their rapid evacuation by helicopter.

The Australian and Afghan force was repeatedly fired on by multiple insurgents during the mission.

“The partnered force fought through each of these engagements and captured large amounts of processed opium, high-grade poppy seed, drug processing equipment and several caches of weapons and explosives,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Each of the wounded personnel had to have surgery.

The interpreter and one of the soldiers were in a satisfactory condition.

The other soldier is in a serious but stable condition.
