‘Certain states against Syria stability’

Speaking at his Tuesday press conference in the Iranian capital, Tehran, Mehmanparast said that certain states are arming and funding the terrorist groups fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order to spread insecurity and lead the country to a civil war.

The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns such attempts, which would further complicate the Syrian conflict, he pointed out.

The senior Foreign Ministry official also referred to Syria as a litmus test for regional and world countries.

They can either support the materialization of the Syrian people’s demands or pursue their own objectives, which is to mount excessive pressure on the Syrian government and weaken the anti-Israeli resistance front, he said.

Syria has lashed out at Saudi Arabia and Qatar for supporting the arming of the anti-government groups in the country, accusing Riyadh and Doha of becoming a “partner” to the armed groups in Syria.

Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja’afari has said Saudi Arabia and Qatar support the “armed terrorist groups” in Syria.

Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Syria last August, nearly five months after the unrest struck the country.

The kingdom has since then launched a worldwide campaign against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, especially by exerting pressure on Damascus through the Arab League.

Qatar has meanwhile called for supplying anti-Assad groups with arms and financial support. Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani called in late February for the creation of an Arab force to “open humanitarian corridors to provide security to the Syrian people.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

On Sunday, armed groups targeted the headquarters of the Central Bank of Syria with a rocket-propelled grenade, and ambushed a police patrol, in the capital Damascus.
