Spain pummels Italy to win Euro 2012 cup

Imperious Spain thrashed Italy 4-0 in Kiev on Sunday to win a successive European Championship title.

Vicente del Bosque’s team also made history by winning three consecutive major tournaments following its triumph at the 2012 World Cup in South Africa.

Spain opened the scoring 14 minutes into the match when Cesc Fabregas chipped in a cross that midfielder David Silva headed home.

Jordi Alba slotted past Gianluigi Buffon five minutes before half time to double the lead for La Roja thanks to a neat pass from Xavi Hernandez who sprung the offside trap and found the onrushing Alba unmarked near the box.

Worse was to follow for Cesare Prandelli’s team two minutes after the hour mark when Italy’s third and final substitute Thiago Motta, who had only played for four minutes, was forced to limp off with what seemed to be a hamstring strain.

Fernando Torres scored the third goal in the 84th minute before setting up fellow substitute Juan Mata who completed Italy’s misery with a late goal and give the world champions an easy victory.

The result was the highest margin of victory recorded in either a European Championship or World Cup final.
