HOBART, AUSTRALIA - DECEMBER 14: Michael Clarke and Shane Watson of Australia walk out onto the field during day one of the First Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka at Blundstone Arena on December 14, 2012 in Hobart, Australia. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)

9:59amPhil Lutton: Cricket. Bizarre selections, weird rotations, fast-tracking underdone ‘project’ players, hidings in India and now this.

Sure, the players probably should have fired off an email, but Mickey Arthur and to an extent, Michael Clarke, have lost the plot.

Arthur must go before the Ashes. We are already a laughing stock – lets hope this nonsense is the final punchline for a management team that can’t see the forest for the trees.

9:48am:Cricket. Keep the votes coming on our poll.

Poll: Did Mickey Arthur and Michael Clarke make the right decision in standing down Shane Watson, James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja for failing to do their ‘homework’?

9:46am:League. Following the story about Josh Dugan breaking team rules on drinking while injured, the Canberra fullback sent out this tweet this morning.

9:42am:League. Sacked Cronulla doctor Dave Givney says he will take legal action over his axing from the NRL club.

After 28 years of service, Givney was dismissed last Friday along with football manager Darren Mooney, head trainer Mark Noakes and physiotherapist Konrad Schultz while coach Shane Flanagan was stood down.

The Sharks board claimed their staff shake-up was not related to any use of banned substances, but rather ‘‘serious management failures’’ during a three-month period in 2011 when sports scientist Stephen Dank worked at the club.

Dank reportedly severed ties with the club after a clash with Givney. The veteran doctor, who was also the Australian and NSW team medico during his career, said  he has spoken to lawyers over his sacking.‘‘After meeting with my lawyer today I’ve decided to take legal action,’’ Givney told The Australian.

9:38am:Cricket. And here come the Poms.

9:33amSebastian Hassett: Cricket. Though it could go down like a lead ballon with the Australian public, Mickey Arthur deserves support for deciding enough is enough and sending four players packing.

Arthur’s popularity may well take a hit but in the team’s long-term interests, some players need to think long and hard about putting the national cause ahead of self-interest. The “good, hard ruthless culture” desired by the South African about hasn’t been present in years.

Full marks also to Michael Clarke for backing his coach and speaking passionately about the “honour” of representing Australia and not taking it for granted. Clearly, those four did exactly that.

9:27amMichael Chammas: League. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No … it’s a squirrel. Just as the Parramatta fullback began to rack up the frequent flyer points, the Hayne plane is on the verge of being grounded.

Jarryd Hayne is contemplating replacing his famous post-try celebration with the ”squirrel” dance synonymous with his NFL hero, Ray Lewis.

And check out Lewis in action here.

9:16am:Football. The fallout from the Mohamed bin Hammam corruption scandal in world football led to FIFA suspending another leading Asian member of its executive committee on Monday.

Vernon Manilal Fernando of Sri Lanka has been banned from taking part in any football activities for up to 90 days ‘‘to prevent interference with the establishment of the truth’’ during an ethics investigation, FIFA said. The suspension relates to the investigation by FIFA prosecutor Michael J Garcia into the alleged misuse of Asian Football Confederation accounts.

9:01am:Cricket. C’mon Fitzy, stop sitting on the fence and tell us what you really think.

8:57amJon Tuxworth: League. Canberra Raiders star Josh Dugan faces possible sanctions after admitting to management on Monday that he had breached the club’s strict alcohol policy for injured players.

A Raiders official said on Monday night that Dugan and team-mate Blake Ferguson had confirmed to the the club they had been drinking.

8:53amChris Barrett: Cricket. It wasn’t by coincidence that Mickey Arthur described Monday’s stunning development in India as Australia’s ”Kevin Pietersen” moment.

The standing down of four squad members – including the vice-captain Shane Watson – is the head coach’s undeniable statement that enough is enough. It has already echoed around the cricket world.

8:50am:Cricket. No surprises that Shane Warne took to Twitter about the situation with the Australian cricket team.

8:47amPaul Suttor: Cricket. The players stuffed up by not showing commitment when they didn’t fulfil their duty by making their presentation but dumping them from a Test is both an over-reaction and a luxury this Australian team cannot afford.

Make them do laps, sweep out the sheds, fine them or make them stand in front of their teammates and explain why they couldn’t be bothered to complete what seems to be a simple task. But axing them will divide the dressing room and also mean some out-of-form players will receive an ill-deserved Test cap.

8:42am:Cricket. What do you think of the axing of the four players from the Test squad?

8:40amGlenn Jackson: League. Asked what he would offer to the debutant Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter, the 658-match veteran Wayne Bennett, thought for a moment, smiled slightly and uttered: “Welcome.”

Bennett’s Newcastle Knights had dished up a lesson for Potter’s Tigers, and the newcomer to the premiership was scratching for positives.

8:37am: Here’s today back page. Chris Barrett reported on the axing of the four players from the Australian cricket squad, while Michael Chammas had the story about how Shane Flanagan is still playing an active role in coaching the Sharks.

8:32amBen Coady: Welcome to SportsDay Live. Most of us have handed in our homework (unlike Shane Watson, James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja), although we’re waiting for Chris Roots’s long division assignment. We’ll be keeping up to date with reaction to the axing of the four cricketers, plus all the news that happens in sport.

        • 100% agree with Clarke and Arthur. THe team is being thrashed, wouldn’t hurt for some players to think about what they bring to the table. They had 5 days to come up with 3 points.

In the end, you do what your employer asks, regardless of what you think. Your opinion doesn’t count.
