Sweden warns of ‘blowing up’ Iran talks

“I sincerely hope that no one wants to blow up the diplomatic process. That would be an act of international irresponsibility of the first order,” AFP quoted Carl Bildt as saying on Friday.

While expressing his optimism about the talks, the Swedish official advised against setting any premature deadlines for the negotiations to yield comprehensive results.

“I don’t expect there will be a quick resolution of issues because the gulf of mistrust is so enormously deep,” he said. “It will take some time.”

Last month, Bildt welcomed Iran’s bid to send a letter to the European Union, indicating its readiness to resume talks with the major world powers. “We had a letter from the Iranians which was basically satisfactory,” he said.

After receiving Iran’s letter, the P5+1 – comprising of Russia, China, France, Britain, the US, and Germany – expressed their readiness to resume the talks with Iran earlier this month. Tehran says it is ready to continue negotiations based on common ground.

Iran and the P5+1 have held two rounds of multifaceted talks. They once met in Geneva in December 2010 and another time in Istanbul, Turkey in January 2011.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear technology.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s nuclear energy program has been diverted towards nuclear weapons production.
