Sydney Water workers set to strike

More than 1200 Sydney Water workers are set to down their tools over job cuts they say are putting the city’s water and environment at risk.

The four-hour protected industrial action will see workers rally at Parramatta Stadium in Sydney’s west at about 1.45pm (AEST) on Thursday, with a further 100 workers to gather at Wollongong.

The Australian Services Union (ASU) NSW secretary Sally McManus said workers were fed up with cost cuts, which have already seen 300 people lose their jobs.

“We’re drawing a line in the sand and saying no more job cuts and no more service cuts – it’s putting Sydney’s water and environmental standards at risk,” Ms McManus said in a statement on Thursday.

Since the cuts, Ms McManus said Sydneysiders have had to wait longer to get their pipes fixed and developers are no longer supervised when they connect buildings to the city’s water supply.

“We have seen cases where sewerage has been leaking through a house for hours and hasn’t been fixed because we don’t have the staff to fix it,” she told AAP.

Pipes broken overnight were also not being fixed until the following morning, she said.

“Families are waking up in the morning and they don’t have a shower and they can’t use their toilet.

“It is only this year that we have seen this.”

Workers were concerned that their inability to fix pipes quickly would mean sewerage would seep into streams and other water sources, Ms McManus said.

She said some services would be affected during the strike on Thursday and people were being warned to expect a delay when ringing Sydney Water’s call centre.

But she said any emergencies would be attended to immediately.
