Syria opposition to pick new chairman

During the first day of the group’s meeting in Istanbul on Saturday, Abdulbaset Sieda was chosen as the only candidate for the position.

Sieda, born in 1956, said during a press conference on Saturday that he is the only candidate, adding that the gathering is expected to confirm him as the new president.

He added that the group supports the Free Syrian Army in its campaign to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Seida will replace Paris-based Burhan Ghalioun, who offered to resign over mounting criticism of his leadership.

A total of 43 representatives, including Ghalioun, have gathered in Istanbul to elect the next person to head the organization, which unites seven foreign-based Syrian opposition groups.

Seida represents the Kurdish bloc within the council.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) recently announced that it had abandoned the peace plan brokered by joint United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan after the Syrian government did not respond to the rebels’ deadline.

The rebels had earlier threatened to abandon the cease-fire unless the army halted its operations against armed groups by June 1.

Annan’s six-point plan, effective from mid-April, calls for the establishment of a cease-fire between the government and the opposition and also says humanitarian groups should be allowed to have access to the population, detainees should be released, and a political dialogue should be started.

The unrest in Syria began in March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in support of President Assad’s government.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
