Syrian army seizes rebel stronghold

Violence escalated in Syria on Saturday despite the withdrawal of some government troops from conflict areas. New footage has emerged of armed men firing weapons on the streets of Homs.

On Monday, Syrian President Bashar Assad agreed to an April 10 deadline to implement international envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan, which calls for the withdrawal of Syrian troops from population centers and a cease-fire.

Annan’s plan is the latest in efforts to reach a peaceful settlement to the year-long unrest in Syria.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

On Sunday, several Persian Gulf Arab states pledged 100 million dollars to provide salaries for Syrian rebels fighting against the government, while the US said it will give them communication equipment.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar also backed the idea of arming the opposition against Bashar Assad’s government.

The move came despite efforts made by al-Assad’s government for implementing reforms with the aim of ending unrest which has been plaguing the country.
