nsnbc : The Russian Defense Ministry stated that armed Syrian groups who have signed the ceasefire agreement asked the Ministry to protect them from the Islamic State. ISIL reportedly targets those who laid down their arms.

Lieutenant General Sergey Kuralenko, the head of the Russian administrated truce and coordination center at the Hmeinim Air Base in Syria, briefed the press on Saturday, saying that the leaders of the armed opposition groups who have signed the ceasefire agreement asked the Russian Defense Ministry for protection from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS / ISIL / Daesh).
In the first days of the center’s work, opposition leaders asked Russia for security guarantees and protection from Syrian governmental bodies as a crucial condition for the truce. In recent days the situation changed drastically, the general said. Kuralenko commented on what he described as a significant change in the opposition groups attitude and the situation, saying:
“They are asking us to provide their security and defend them from militants of the ISIS group and other terrorist organizations announcing a manhunt for the opposition figures who had signed ceasefire agreements. … From our part, we will help ensure security of the leaders of the Syrian opposition units and heads of local administrations who signed agreements to end fighting and to start the reconciliation process.”
The monitoring and coordination center at the Hmeinim Air Base aims at reconciling conflicting parties and groups in Syria as well as communication between opposition groups and the government, at organizing, securing and delivering humanitarian assistance and aid, and at de-escalating situations where the ceasefire collapses. The center was established on the basis of an agreement reached at the jointly US – Russian chaired International Syria Support Group. The ceasefire is generally speaking holding, even though the center on Saturday, announced that there had been nine breaches of the ceasefire during the past 24 hours.
