Taliban posts photo of diggers’ killer

The Taliban have posted a photo online of the rogue Afghan soldier accused of killing three Australian soldiers last month.

Lance Corporal Stjepan “Rick” Milosevic, Sapper James Martin and Private Robert Poate, all with the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) Task Group, were shot dead at a patrol base in Oruzgan province on August 29.

Former Afghan army sergeant Hikmatullah is pictured on Twitter in front of a microphone with an apparent Taliban symbol on it.

A caption says: “Hikmatullah, hero who shot dead 6 Australian invaders, wounded 4 on 30th August 2012.”

The Taliban regularly exaggerate reports of casualties.

The photo suggests Hikmatullah is hiding with Taliban support, probably in a built-up area with electricity and internet access, Fairfax reports.

The Taliban have claimed Hikmatullah has joined fighters in the mountains near Chora Valley, where the attack took place.

But there has also been speculation he might try to flee to Pakistan, which would put him out of reach of the Australian and Afghan troops searching for him, Fairfax says.
