Teenager arrested over grass fire

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy has been questioned over a grass fire near the western Victorian town of Ararat.

Police said the Ararat teenager was arrested on Saturday night and released pending further inquiries.

More than 300 firefighters and four water-bombing aircraft battled the blaze that swept through 800 hectares. The fire broke out on Saturday night a few kilometres north-east of Ararat and was brought under control about 5.30pm yesterday.

It was slow moving but at one stage threatened six properties. The Pyrenees Highway was closed and residents were warned to activate their bushfire survival plans. The Country Fire Authority briefed residents about the fire at Ararat’s Town Hall yesterday.
