‘Tehran plan able to end Syria crisis’

“Tehran is trusted by the government of Damascus and the opposition groups. Therefore, Tehran’s plan [to host such a meeting] can be [an] effective [solution to crisis],” Mansour Haqiqatpour noted on Monday.

The lawmaker, member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, emphasized that establishing peace and security in the region is Iran’s basic policy.

“[Holding] a meeting attended by the Syria’s government and opposition in Tehran will help to create a new Syria [which will be] powerful and independent and based on safeguarding the national interests,” he added.

Haqiqatpour stated that the meeting will prove Iran’s influence in solving the regional crisis and will tell the international community that Iran’s clout in the region is so high as to allow it to mediate between parties.

“The friends of Syria like China, Russia, and Iraq will support Tehran plan and the [ensuing] meeting can end Syrian crisis due to presence of Syria’s friends,” he said.

On July 15, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the Islamic Republic is prepared to facilitate talks between the Syrian government and opposition by hosting a meeting between the two sides in Tehran.

“We believe that the crisis in Syria should be solved through a Syria-Syria solution and nothing should be imposed from outside and no government should be imposed [on Syrians] from outside,” he added.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, saying that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
