The Ride to Hyperborea

by Runahild (of the one-woman band Eliwagar) [Consider listening to her sing as you read her words.]:

I know somewhere, far far north, in between the pure white snowy mountains spreads a wide green valley, and there is opening the ancestral path, the one that lead to the great golden hall whee all the noble ancestors of the daughters and sons of the north stand together…

This vision, the wind, messenger from Hyperborea, whispered it to me one frosty morning of autumn, while dead leaves on the ground were embraced by the ice and mother earth fell asleep under the first snow falling like sweet feathers to protect from a northern winter summoned… some days ago, the sun disappeared in the south, he the son the sky and the earth, pure bright golden light inspiring wisdom and knowledge, his blaze faded at horizon, plunging the land into a long and cold night, under a starry sky, where the north star, above all other, seems to shine eternally to show us the path of the ancestors even in the darkness…

In the village, the folk gathered near the mightiest oak, and made great fire to hail and honour Sol, thus the most beautiful poems started to be sang by the greatest skalds, the most enchanting melodies was played by the best musicians, and this perfect harmonious dedication under the oak could reach the higher realm of the sky, the sun death was cried, and the folk as one voice, one Nordic voice, called to him again, asked for his rebirth…

And on this very cold night, the wind, faithful messenger, caressed the frozen soil, and brought us a wonderful gift… there, from the north, there were lights in the sky dancing over trees and mountains… the northern light did we call them, just like some greetings of our ancestors telling us to not despair, no matter how deep might seem the night, for they are waiting us to be proud and strong enough for one day deserve our place amongst them, they remind us light does never truly fade, it’s forever in our spirit, and we must find it and find the courage to follow it through the misty unknown path that spreads in front of us…

The Norns weaved the runes of fate for all of us, daughters and sons of the north, in this fate we must trust, as much as we do trust that the north star shall guide us until our homeland…

The northern lights told us, there is darkness only for the one who wants to be blind, the spirit of the ancestors is always with us for anyone who is able to listen to wise advices, and the sun, the golden light of Hyperborea is within the blood of the hyperborean folk, and thus shall never fade as long as our hearts beats.

The sun, son of the sky and the earth, son of Tyr and Frigga, beloved by the wind who sing his glory. The sun is Heimdall who, with the goddess of dawn and eternal youth Idunn gave birth to the Nordic race, and thus we do carry their blood.

One might wonder, why don’t I talk about Odhinn being the husband of Frigga?

Yes, that is what everyone does believe, that is what we read everywhere, thus most people take this for supreme truth. It is not wrong indeed, but it’s not from Hyperborea.

I myself would not ask anyone to take what I say for supreme truth either, because indeed paganism is not something to follow blindly, without questioning… you won’t anger the gods or goddesses because you question them, or try to understand the truth, in the contrary, the gods and goddesses of the north aren’t interested in sheep, who only follow what is written, without ever trying to find inside of them the true path that leads to the source of everything, to the origin, to the roots of the tree of Yggdrasil…

The hyperborean realm is keeper of old wisdom and knowledge, and those standing there in Walhalla are only those who deserved it, through their fight in life, through their will to learn and to teach.

So, I myself questioned a lot of things, followed my own instinct, and faced the storm and the chaos, in order to find my own path. Thus, what do I do talk about is my own vision and my own feeling.

For me, Odin is the main god of the Viking period, and even a bit before it started, but everywhere I read that Odin wasn’t the most ancient god, but that it was Tyr, the sky father god, the one to rule over Thule.

Tyr is known as the wisest and the most courageous of them all, not even Odhinn can reach his wisdom.

Tyr is the god of the sky, while Odhinn is the wind. Thus the sun cannot be the son of the earth and the wind, if you look at nature, you can yourself see the sun born from the earth Frigga, and rise to the sky Tyr.

Thor, also a courageous and loyal god, is today known as the son of Odhinn, but how could the wind give birth to lightning and thunder? It would well be logical that Thor is the son of Tyr, the sky, because thunder and lightning come from the sky.

Most of the knowledge we may have from the old gods and goddesses come from the Edda, and other writing done either during the Viking age or after it – so by christians. But there is no writing coming from the roots of the hyperborean folk and there are not many who speak about them.

Hyperborea is seen for all the descendants of the north as the original land, from where we did come from. Thule, the mystic isle, which once disappeared under the raging sea…

On Thule ruled all equilibrium, it was sacred and precious. The Irminsul represented it, symbol associated to Tyr. It meant justice, harmony and equilibrium. Thus were equal the earth and the sky, fire and ice, men and women… All was complementary, and the land lived in peace… until this equilibrium got broken, and the peace was no more…

The hyperborean folk left Thule, and went down south, meeting other folk, with different culture than theirs.

Once Thule had gone under the sea (Thule – not Hyperborea), Tyr lost his place, this I do not invent, it is written in many books based on archaeology. At the Viking age, Odhinn doesn’t represent justice, neither harmony or equilibrium, he represents first and foremost war and the strategy of war. Of course, it’s natural that he was the most hailed by kings, because they needed victory, but victory was over their own brothers sometimes, and Tyr couldn’t make justice, because two Nordic brothers killing each other makes no sense. Indeed, what north Europe would know for years and years coming would be useless war between people of the same folk, people who had the same roots, who had the same blood running in their veins… Odhinn didn’t make justice, he just decided randomly who would win, depending what army he would see first, and letting his spear decide. But during the centuries to come, the rage of victory and conquest blinded our folk…

There has been massacre between brothers, when Charlemagne (himself of Germanic ancestry) invaded all Germany, destroyed the Irminsul, symbol of Thule, and killed thousands of pagans… ah, he was not the only one leader, to hurt our folk… many others would follow…

My opinion is that Odhinn, was before all, a god of the wind. He is a messenger between the earth and the sky, a wanderer, and is just like us, always in quest of more wisdom and more knowledge, because Tyr, the higher sky, is what we strive to reach, just like the world tree Yggdrasil, taking deep roots into the earth and spreading his branches until the sky.

But when, before the Viking time, north people started to be in contact with the south, even just for exchange, the vision of the world changed… Odhinn took an other role, now he was not just the wanderer, the messenger, he took the form of war. He became more popular amongst the kings, and we made of Frigga his wife.. of course, because he replaced Tyr, and the sun became his son…

Also an other interesting thing, the spear that became with Gungnir the weapon of Odhinn, was first of all the weapon of Tyr, just like the rune Tiwaz itself represents it, the spear means justice. And the golden hall of Walhalla, that is said to be the hall of Odhinn, is actually Hyperborea, with walls done by spear, and roof by shield, it’s a protected place, where the right and noble ones go after their death, it’s there in between the snowy mighty mountains, where always spread an evergreen plain in the valley…. Walhalla is the hall of Hyperborea.

Please, don’t take what I ask for truth, make your own research, follow your own instinct, and maybe you’ll understand the same as I did.

To understand and fight a problem, we must find the roots. Nothing can be healed an other way. Why is our folk so weak today? Because it lost the primal spirituality of the north, because it gave up to the south, because instead of fighting the real problem, they killed each other… how much slaughter, how many wars, how much blood shed from our folk, all of this to serve the south? All of this to bring them gold and money?

If a baby cries, we have to find what’s wrong, the origin, and then calm them… now it’s our folk that cries, it’s our blood, our spirit, our ancestors, our earth that cries, and the only way to erase this deep pain is to find the roots, to give back to the hyperborean folk the hyperborean spirituality and values, and thus find the way back to harmony and live amongst our folk, allowing our blood and heritage to survive under the old traditions of the north, and nevermore let the south poison our spirits…
