BEHIND her beaming smile and idyllic life, Kim Patterson – who last week killed her teenage daughter before ending her own life – was plagued by psychotic episodes that descended on her like a “dark cloud”.

Together with investment banker husband Peter Thompson, the 48-year-old Brisbane mother had two beautiful children and a multi-million-dollar property portfolio.

But last Wednesday her illness wiped out almost everything she loved.

In a shocking act of violence, Ms Patterson murdered 14-year-old daughter Sidonie Thompson at their home in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Paddington before driving to the city’s Story Bridge and jumping to her death in front of 12-year-old son Hugo.

Now her family is left to try to piece together what happened, fearing they may never know the full story of what really went on.

“She would have been due to see the psychologist on the day before, on the Tuesday,” her shattered father, George Patterson, said yesterday, shedding light on the case for the first time.

“She was seeing a psychologist once a week. She was also seeing a psychiatrist – he was with the health department, she saw him once a month and he was checking she was taking medication.

“She spent some time in the psychiatrist ward at the Brisbane general (hospital), the Royal Brisbane, for several weeks.” Describing the illness, he said: “It was as though she had this big black cloud coming over her.”

Mr Patterson said her daughter seemed to be in one of those clouds when they spoke for what would be the final time last Sunday. “When I was speaking to her it seemed to be difficult for her to register what I was saying,” he said. “I’ve got no medical training. I don’t know, but something has happened. I think something snapped.

“She made plans with her sister to spend some time together with their children at Christmas.”

Her mother Valerie added: “She wasn’t just a loving mum, she was a loving daughter and a loving sister.”

The couple’s daughter Sidonie was a talented student and a gifted singer whose voice will always be remembered by her school friends.

“As you’ve probably gathered, Sidonie was exceptional,” Mr Patterson said.

“I think she would have done whatever she put her mind to … she was such a gifted person, she really was.”
