The BBC’s own presenters warned bosses against the move to its new base in Salford, saying high profile guests wouldn’t bother to make the journey North.

Last week, they were proved right when BBC Breakfast was forced to conduct 12 interviews via video link because their guests were based in London.

The show struggled to persuade MPs and financial experts to take time out of their day to travel 200 miles to Salford as one of the biggest news stories of the year broke – the Barclays rate-fixing scandal.

Instead guests were filmed at the corporation’s studios in Westminster and Television Centre in West London – where the show was based before the move.

Other guests appeared from London speaking on topics ranging from the European referendum, to the death of British soldiers in Afghanistan.

The majority who made it to the Salford sofas were based in the North.
Those who had to be interviewed by video link on the Barclays theme included Labour’s business spokesman Chuka Umunna, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander MP, whose interview was repeated on the show, and Labour MP Pat McFadden of the Treasury Select Committee.

The only day with no video link interviews was yesterday. The failure to get guests into the studio will come as an embarrassment for the programme.
The BBC has repeatedly denied that the move to its northern base, called MediaCity, was politically motivated, despite accusations from within its own ranks.

And in April, the BBC admitted it had spent more than £2million ferrying and flying staff and guests between London, Manchester and Salford in two years.

A BBC source said there are no plans to move any part of BBC Breakfast back to London on a permanent basis.

A BBC spokesman said: ‘This week over half the interviews were on the sofa, with the majority of others being location-specific including daily guests from Wimbledon.’
