Thomson should get no vote: Abbott

Newly independent federal MP Craig Thomson should be prevented from voting in the parliament until allegations against him are resolved, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has instructed Mr Thomson to leave the party while claims he misused Health Services Union (HSU) funds during his time as its national secretary are dealt with.

Mr Thomson has agreed, but will stay in parliament and continue to support the government from the crossbench.

Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard’s actions were meaningless if her government continued to rely on Mr Thomson’s vote.

“Nothing that she’s said today has resolved the crisis that is now enveloping her government,” he told reporters in Sydney.

“While she has disowned Mr Thomson, she hasn’t disowned his vote.

“If the prime minister wants to claim the high moral ground here she has got to disown the vote.”

Mr Abbott said Mr Thomson should be prevented from voting in the parliament like Peter Slipper, who stood aside as Speaker last week.

Mr Abbott said Ms Gillard’ action had nothing to do with securing the integrity and repute of the parliament: “This is basically to shore up her numbers.”

Mr Abbott it was time to dissolve the “sad and sorry” current parliament and call a fresh election.
