A PLANE carrying three Australian soldiers killed by a rogue Afghan soldier has arrived in Queensland for their military farewell.

Captain Bryce Duffy, 26, Corporal Ashley Birt, 22, and Lance Corporal Luke Gavin, 29, were killed last Saturday when an Afghan army sergeant being trained by the diggers turned a machine-gun on them during a parade inside a forward operating base at Shah Wali Kot in Kandahar province.

Seven Australian soldiers were wounded in the attack and are recovering in Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre in Germany.

A C17 transport plane carrying their bodies arrived at the RAAF Base Amberley, west of Brisbane at 2.30pm AEST. A guard of honour was formed to escort the bodies off the plane.

Corporal Birt and Lance Corporal Gavin were on their first deployment to Afghanistan and it was Captain Duffy’s second.

All were due to return to Australia early next year.

Corporal Burke’s brother Dale, who was also serving in Afghanistan, returned to Australia a few days ago and will attend the service. The families of Captain Duffy and Lance Corporal Gavin will also attend.

Military service medals will be presented during the memorial.
