TWO accused arsonists are expected to appear in Holden Hill Magistrates Court today charged with destroying a telephone box with fireworks at Hampstead Gardens early this morning.

Police arrested the men, aged 30 and 42 respectively, after receiving a car registration number from a resident who heard a loud explosion near Ways Rd just after midnight.

The information led police to a home at nearby Greenacres where police say they found fireworks and the men.

The explosion triggered alarms in nearby shops and security cameras captured a car leaving the area.

“Earlier, a resident in the street had seen a car suspiciously driving up and down and noted the registration number,” a police spokesman said. “This would prove to be invaluable (because) after the explosion, a similar car was seen to leave the area.

“Armed with security vision and the registration number from the resident, police paid a visit to the registered owners address at Greenacres (where) fireworks were found in the car and further fireworks were found in the house.”

The men are charged with arson, acts to endanger life and having unsecured ammunition.
