Tony Mokbel faces long prison term

Tony Mokbel is looking at a prison sentence of nearly 30 years when he returns to the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday for the final chapter in one of Australia’s longest running and most colourful criminal cases.

Justice will finally catch up with the drug lord more than six years after he skipped Australia and fled to Greece to avoid prison.

As part of a plea deal, Mokbel, 46, who is serving a 12-year sentence for cocaine importation, faces a maximum sentence of between 26 and 29 years, prosecutors say.

And in a rare event for a criminal case, Mokbel’s sentence will be streamed on the internet.

He built and controlled a drug making and trafficking empire that turned over tens of millions of dollars from the mid-1990s to 2007.

At a pre-sentence hearing in May, Mokbel expressed remorse, saying he had a lot of making up to do.

Justice Whelan will hear final submissions from lawyers at 10.30am (AEST) before sentencing Mokbel.
