TOP TIER: Ron Paul Up Into Third In 2012 Race

Congressman trails Obama by just 1%, Perry trails by 3%

Congressman Ron Paul is up into third place in the latest Presidential Nomination preference poll, highlighting once again the fact that the Texas Congressman is a top tier candidate.

In the poll published last night by Gallup, Paul has leapfrogged faux Tea Party candidate Michele Bachmann, despite the fact that she was declared the winner of the Ames straw poll a fortnight ago and universally declared a top tier candidate along with Mitt Romney and Rick Perry by the corporate media.

In the poll of of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents nationwide Paul now stands at 13%, a steady rise from 10% last month and 8% in June.

Bachmann has dropped three points to 10%, while Romney has dropped six points to 17%.

Bachmann and Romney’s losses can be attributed to the fact that Rick Perry has now officially entered the race and polls in first place at 29%.

Ron Paul 2012 blogger Jack Hunter notes:

“Republican primary voters are so dissatisfied with the establishment candidate choices that someone like Perry is able to swoop in and take the lead from Romney almost immediately.”

The fact that Ron Paul has made a modest gain, despite Perry’s announcement, indicates that his support base is still growing, placing the Congressman in a position to become the prime challenger to Perry for the nomination.

Furthermore, a substantial 17% of respondents indicated that they had no preference at this time, meaning that there is still room for Paul to gain a lot of support if he can raise awareness of his campaign.

A whopping haul of $1.8 million during last weekend’s money bomb, also proves Paul is raking in top tier candidate cash levels.

The gulf between Bachmann and Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich, both at 4%, indicates a clear division between the top tier and the secondary tier of candidates.

Another interesting statistic to note is that of the young voters. Paul tops the poll with 29% in the 18-29 age range, with Perry at 21%. Paul is also closer to Perry amongst Liberals and moderates with 14% to Perry’s 17%.

Despite Paul’s steady progress, a large contingent within the corporate media continues to pretend he doesn’t exist.

Jon Thorpe of The San Francisco Chronicle notes:

“That’s right. Ron Paul jumped into third place…and the media continues to ignore his candidacy. I can’t explain it as anything other than outright bias against the man and his ideas.”

Yesterday we reported on Rasmussen’s latest survey indicating that Ron Paul now sits behind Obama by just 1% in a hypothetical run off. In another new poll released last night by Rasmussen, Rick Perry trails Obama by 3% at 43%-40%.

Gallup’s own version of the vs Obama poll had Ron Paul two points back of the President among registered voters at 45% to 47%, while Perry was tied with Obama at 47%.

The Paul campaign today announced that it has appointed Bruce Fein as a senior advisor on legal matters.

Fein, a constitutional scholar, served as associate deputy attorney and general counsel to the Federal Communications Commission under President Ronald Reagan. He served as Research Director for Republicans on the Joint Congressional Committee on Covert Arms Sales to Iran, and on the American Bar Associations Committee on Presidential Signing Statements. He has been a Visiting Fellow for Constitutional Studies at the Heritage Foundation and an adjunct scholar at American Enterprise Institute. He has advised numerous countries on constitutional reform, including South Africa, Hungary and Russia.

“Bruce Fein’s participation adds to our campaign’s already intellectual heft, enabling us to more broadly engage the conversation about constitutionality, civil liberties and the dangers to national security of an increasingly interventionist foreign policy,” said Ron Paul 2012 Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.
