Turkey detains 11 generals for 1997 coup

The court ruling was issued in the capital, Ankara, on Thursday.

Six of the detainees are active generals who have been transferred to Mamak Prison in Ankara and the other five are retired generals who have been sent to Sincan Prison of the capital, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Turkey’s Third Army chief of staff Major General Berkay Turgut is among the generals held in pre-trial detention.

In recent days, Turkish prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for dozens of former military figures over their alleged roles in the 1997 coup.

On May 8, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the prosecutors to quickly finalize the legal case.

“We are seriously disturbed by these arrests. The steps that need to be taken must be taken and (the case) must be finalized.”

The 1997 coup in Turkey is titled “post-modern” since it forced the government to resign without resorting to violent tactics or replacing the civilian administration with the military.
